The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments; and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization.
The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job title: Scientific Officer (Microbiology)
Grade: BS6
Reporting to: Senior Scientific Officer
Department: Testing Services
Section: Microbiology
Responsible for: Senior Laboratory Technician
Number of Posts: One (1)
Job Purpose: To oversee daily operations of the laboratory sections
Key roles and responsibilities
a) Checking on test data and compilation of test reports in the laboratory;
b) Supervising senior laboratory technicians;
c) Ensuring that reagents are correctly prepared and standardized at all times;
d) Preparing progress reports and annual budgets for the sections;
e) Conducting relevant consultancies;
f) Checking and consolidating progress reports for the sections;
g) Developing Standard Operating Procedures;
h) Appraising performance of Senior Technicians;
i) Supervising the collection of samples;
j) Preparing reference materials; and
k) Assigning samples to Laboratory Technicians
Requirements
Required Academic Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate should possess:
a) A Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Sciences/Engineering obtained from a recognized institution;
b) At least 3 years’ practical experience in a related field.
