Job Description

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a University and Centre of Excellence in health education, research, and innovation whose mission is 'to advance knowledge, professional competencies, skills, and innovations in health sciences through high-quality student-centred and innovative education and research that responds to and influences the global/national policy, health, and development needs in an efficient, sustainable, and result-oriented manner'.


KUHeS has secured a grant from the Beginnings Fund through Seed Global Health to support the establishment and implementation of Midwifery models of Care at Bwaila Hospital and Kabudula Rural Hospital in Lilongwe. In view of this, KUHeS would like to recruit two Midwifery Preceptors to support implementation of the grant.


Therefore, applications are being invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Midwifery Preceptor.


Job Summary

The Midwifery Preceptor will report to the Head of Department and will be responsible for the establishment and implementation of the Midwifery Models of Care at the designated site.


Contract Duration


The Midwifery Preceptor will be appointed on a fixed-term contract of 2 years, subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.


Key Duties and Responsibilities


The Midwifery Preceptor will be expected to undertake, among others, the following key duties and responsibilities:

Providing continuity of direct instruction, and supervision of students consistent with the student’s learning needs, module objectives and program outcomes.

Supporting students’ practice and growth with clinical inquiry and reflective practice.

Liaising with the Lecturers or Midwifery Educator on additional or alternative learning activities consistent with the student’s and module outcomes.

Supporting students’ activities in order for them to gain an understanding of the Clinical site, system of care delivery and procedures.

Assessing students’ clinical performance

Providing feedback to the faculty regarding the student’s learning needs and performance.

Orienting stakeholders at the clinical site on the roles, capabilities and learning needs of the students.

Notifying Lecturers or Hospital Matron or Nurse-in-Charge of any concerns regarding students’ or clients’ safety and well-being

Reporting students’ experiences in the clinical area

Serving as a role model consistent with the scope of practice of the nursing and midwifery profession.


Required Education and Experience

The applicants for this position must at least have the following:

A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Midwifery or Bachelor of Science Nursing and Midwifery or Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a University Certificate in Midwifery from an institution accredited or recognised by the National Council for Higher Education

3 years’ relevant practical experience

Registration by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
