Job Description

In Malawi, MSF collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the local community, particularly in the Cervical Cancer project in the Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza District.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL (IPC) SUPERVISOR – 1 POSITION


Workplace : Blantyre and Chiradzulu

Type of contract : 1-year Fixed term with possibility of extension

Start date : April 2026


Main Purpose


Plan, organize, Implement and supervise, monitor and analyse the results of an infection control program in a project or health facility, according to MSF/MoH protocols, safety and IPC measures, to ensure quality of care and safety of patients, caretakers and staff. Strengthening the clinical capacity of nursing staff in the Inpatient Department (IPD), OPD Cervical Cancer services, Chemotherapy, and Concurrent Chemo-Radiotherapy (CCRT). The role focuses on bedside mentoring, structured training, and quality improvement to ensure safe, standardized, and patient-centred oncology care.


Main Responsibilities


Carry out the functions and tasks associated to infection prevention and control (IPC).

In collaboration with each service activity manager/supervisor, maintain and support the day-to-day implementation of infection prevention and control practices includes standard precautions and risk assessment in health structures in all departments including sterilization, laundry and kitchen.

Based on a given patient-diagnosis, collaborates with the medical team to evaluate the need and support for IPC implementation, if needed, for transmission-based precautions (air, droplet and con-tact).

In collaboration with the service supervisor, implement transmission-based precautions for air, droplet and contact transmissible diseases when indicated, and monitor adherence.

Provide regular clinical and technical supervision, training and support to the staff on IPC related is-sues using existing tools such as audits, checklists, or surveillance.

Ensure that organizational aspects in the facility are respected (bed spacing, number of handwashing stations etc…), the correct ‘clean and dirty flows’ inside the healthcare facility and together with the Logistics Manager and Water and Sanitation Supervisor, that the essential WatSan requirements are available in the health structures.

Improve compliance with aseptic care technique and the correct use of antiseptics, detergent and disinfectants, through training and audits.

Ensure quality, correct and rational use of IPC material and equipment and monitor consumption includes cleaning materials and equipment, PPE, etc.

As core member of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, make sure the meeting is regular, lively and pro-active, facilitating the development and following up the Infection Prevention and Control Action Plan.

Participate and coordinate actively in other group/ as Antimicrobial Stewardship and Quality of Care.

Provide effective response in case of epidemics and MDRO alert/outbreak and activation of contingen-cy plan and outbreak response committee.

Active participation to nursing care regarding IPC aspects.

Elaborate regular reporting, and meeting minutes to have updated and reliable information about IPC activities.

Carry out administrative tasks together with HR regarding staff recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, coaching, development and communication to ensure both level, the sizing and the amount of knowledge required.

Organize and coordinate the supervision of the team under his/her responsibility and participate in the associated HR processes of evaluation.

Shares regular feedback/reports to IPC committee and concerned Supervisors, NAM, MAM, MTL, PMR and staff as needed on positive and points to be improved. Specific Accountabilities

Strengthen nursing practice through bedside mentoring in patient assessment, care planning, chemotherapy/CCRT monitoring, symptom management, and pain control.

Ensure compliance with IPC standards, audit, including hand hygiene, PPE use, aseptic technique, sterilization, and safe cytotoxic drug handling.

Train and support nurses in safe chemotherapy administration, emergency response, and post-treatment monitoring.

Monitor documentation quality and adherence to clinical protocols, addressing gaps through continuous coaching and refresher training.

Clinical Training & Mentorship

Provide on-the-job training and bedside coaching to nurses in IPD, OPD, chemotherapy, and CCRT services.

Support competency development in oncology nursing care, including pre- and post-chemotherapy management.

Orient newly recruited nurses and daily workers to oncology protocols and procedures.

Chemotherapy & CCRT Support

Train staff on safe chemotherapy preparation, administration, monitoring, and management of side effects.

Ensure proper use of infusion pumps and adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols.

Strengthen nurses’ skills in monitoring patients undergoing CCRT and identifying complications early.

Clinical Standards & Quality Improvement

Promote adherence to clinical guidelines, infection prevention and control (IPC), and patient safety standards.

Monitor nursing documentation and provide feedback for improvement.

Participate in audits, case reviews, and supportive supervision activities.

Holistic Patient Care

Reinforce pain management, symptom control, and supportive care approaches.

Promote patient education, counselling, and compassionate communication.

Coordination & Reporting

Collaborate with medical teams, Pharmacy, physiotherapy, mental health, and palliative care services.

Report training needs, progress, and challenges to the Nursing Supervisor/MTL.


Requirements


Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing with valid registration with the Nurses Council of Malawi

Experience

Desirable 2 years of previous experience

Demonstratable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting

Previous experience in other NGO’s

Experience in IPC, OT, or Intensive Care Unit is an asset

Language

Fluency in English and Chichewa

Knowledge

Essential - Computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
