The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments; and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization.

The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job title: Industrial Metrology Officer

Grade: BS6

Reporting to: Senior Industrial Metrology Officer

Department: Metrology Services

Section: Industrial Metrology

Responsible for: Senior Industrial Metrology Technician

Number of Posts: Four (4)

Job Purpose: To ensure effective and efficient implementation of Industrial metrology activities.

Key roles and responsibilities

a) Daily management of a designated laboratory i.e. Temperature, Mass, Volume, Pressure, Force or Length Laboratory

b) Supervising Senior Industrial Metrology Technicians;

c) Facilitating the calibration of weighing and measuring instruments;

d) Planning calibration trips;

e) Maintaining accuracy of working standards;

f) Creating and maintaining equipment files for measuring and test equipment requiring calibration;

g) Drafting reminder letters to clients on equipment due for calibration;

h) Keeping and updating records for calibrated equipment;

i) Initiating maintenance of equipment;

j) Compiling weekly progress reports; and

k) Appraising the performance of Senior Industrial Metrology Technicians.

Required Academic Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should possess:

a) A Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Physics or A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Biomedical, Telecommunications, Metallurgy Engineering or Metrology;

b) At least 2 years’ practical experience in a related field.
