ABOUT EXPORT DEVELOPMENT FUND

Export Development Fund (EDF) is a development finance institution (DFI) mandated to promote the growth as well as diversification of the country’s exports. EDF’s mission is to support the Malawi economy through provision of foreign trade solutions to facilitate export diversification, international competitiveness and inclusive growth. EDF also plays a leading role in job creation by investing in ambitious projects and initiatives, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness of Malawi’s exports.

EDF’s young and dynamic team is motivated towards the collective goal of transforming Malawi’s exporting sector for accelerated economic development.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for energetic and innovative individual to join EDF as a Finance Manager.

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Chief Finance Officer, the Finance Manager will lead the Fund’s core financial operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing financial management, financial reporting, budget execution, treasury management and internal financial controls while ensuring sound financial governance and supporting EDF’s strategic mandate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

I. FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING AND STATUTORY REPORTING

  • Lead the end-to-end preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in strict compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and statutory regulations.
  • Prepare high-level financial reports, analytical board packages, and paper submissions for Executive Management and the Board Audit Committee.

II. BUDGETING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING

  • Oversee the preparation, consolidation, monitoring, and execution of the Fund’s annual operational (OPEX) and capital (CAPEX) expenditure budgets.
  • Conduct robust variance analyses and financial modelling to optimize capital allocation across the institution.

III. TREASURY AND CASH FLOW MANAGEMENT

  • Monitor foreign exchange exposure, liquidity ratios, and short-to-long-term cash flow projections to maintain optimal working capital.
  • Evaluate financial risks (including credit, liquidity, and market risks) and advise Executive Leadership on resource mobilization strategies to support EDF’s core mandate.

IV. INTERNAL CONTROLS AND AUDIT COORDINATION

  • Establish, enforce, and maintain robust internal financial control frameworks to safeguard institutional assets and uphold operational compliance.
  • Serve as the primary operational liaison for internal and external auditors, ensuring timely management responses and implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Proactively manage relationship interfaces with key institutional stakeholders, including commercial banks, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies.

V. TEAM LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE SUPPORT

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of the finance team to foster continuous technical growth and operational efficiency.
  • Enforce sound corporate governance standards, enterprise risk management protocols, and regulatory compliance across all financial activities.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
  • A Master’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration or a related field will be an added advantage.
  • A full professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CIMA or an equivalent qualification with active membership in ICAM or another recognised professional accounting body.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ progressive experience in financial management, including at least three (3) to five (5) years at a supervisory or managerial level.
  • Experience within financial services, development finance institutions (DFIs) or structured trade finance environments will be an added advantage.
  • Advanced knowledge of IFRS, taxation and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics, together with strong financial modelling skills.
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • High ethical standards, integrity and sound professional judgement.
