Position: Family Medicine Physician

Location: Lisungwi Community Hospital, Neno District, Malawi

Employment Type: Full-Time

Working Hours: Monday – Friday (40 hours per week)

Reports To: Secondary Care and Programs Director

OVERVIEW

Partners In Health/Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (PIH/APZU) is a global health organisation committed to achieving health equity through accompaniment, partnership, and health systems strengthening.

Working in partnership with the Government of Malawi since 2007, PIH/APZU supports health service delivery, primary healthcare strengthening, digital health, research, clinical education, and policy development across Malawi.

The organisation is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Family Medicine Physician based at Lisungwi Community Hospital in Neno District.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership in advancing integrated, person-centred primary healthcare across communities, primary healthcare facilities, and secondary hospitals. The role will also support health systems strengthening, medical education, quality improvement, and clinical governance.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND INTEGRATED CARE

  • Provide strategic clinical leadership to strengthen integrated service delivery across hospitals, health facilities, and community services.
  • Support decentralisation of chronic care, maternal and newborn health, emergency care, and other priority services.
  • Strengthen referral pathways and multidisciplinary team-based care.
  • Promote patient-centred and family-centred healthcare.

DIRECT CLINICAL CARE

  • Provide specialist Family Medicine services including outpatient and inpatient care.
  • Conduct ward rounds, emergency care, complex case management, and clinical consultations.
  • Support outreach specialist clinics where required.
  • Strengthen clinical practice across the district.

PRIMARY HEALTHCARE STRENGTHENING

  • Conduct outreach visits to health centres.
  • Mentor clinicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Support management of chronic diseases and maternal, newborn, and child health services.
  • Improve referral and follow-up systems.
  • Support implementation of national clinical guidelines.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Lead clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support patient safety programmes and evidence-based guideline implementation.
  • Monitor quality indicators and support accreditation standards.

MEDICAL EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

  • Teach Family Medicine trainees, interns, and clinical students.
  • Mentor healthcare professionals.
  • Develop continuing professional development programmes.
  • Support competency-based learning across healthcare levels.

HEALTH SYSTEMS STRENGTHENING

  • Provide technical support to the District Health Management Team (DHMT).
  • Support district clinical planning and integrated service delivery.
  • Strengthen implementation of national health priorities.

DIGITAL HEALTH AND DATA USE

  • Promote effective use of electronic medical records and clinical dashboards.
  • Support data-driven clinical decision-making.
  • Encourage digital innovations that improve healthcare quality.

PARTNERSHIPS AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

  • Build relationships with Ministry of Health departments, healthcare institutions, academic partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent PIH/APZU in district, national, and international forums.
  • Support medical education partnerships and collaborations.

RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND LEARNING

  • Support identification of funding opportunities.
  • Participate in proposal development and grant writing.
  • Support operational research, scientific writing, and evidence dissemination.
  • Contribute to innovation and quality improvement projects.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AND PROGRAMME LEADERSHIP

  • Lead planning, implementation, monitoring, and improvement of Family Medicine programmes.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and supervision to clinical teams.
  • Promote professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and patient-centred care.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies and clinical standards.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants should possess:

  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Family Medicine from an accredited training institution.
  • Experience in Family Medicine service delivery and health systems strengthening.
  • Experience in medical education programme delivery.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare systems in resource-limited settings.
  • Ability to provide specialised clinical and surgical management.
  • Strong leadership, integrity, professionalism, and work ethic.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and local language.
  • Ability to analyse health policies and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Strong networking, negotiation, and coordination skills.
