CEDEP was founded in November 2006 as a human rights organisation and registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962. Its core work addresses the needs and challenges of LGBTIQ+ persons in Malawi through advocacy and lobbying, human rights promotion, health education, training, capacity building, networking and research.

CEDEP has implemented several strategic plans since its establishment, with the most recent covering 2021–2025. As this planning period comes to an end, the organisation seeks to assess its achievements, identify emerging priorities and develop a new strategic direction to guide its work over the next five years.
